I predict you will be very disappointed come the next generation or two when every game is purchased through digital distribution and/or tied directly to your account. I'd prefer no DRM at all, but if I have to tolerate something, I'd prefer Steam over the alternatives (Stardock, disc checking, etc).

When Steam gets shut down in 2027, I won't care that I lose the ability to play E:TW (or they'll patch out that requirement long before then).ĬD checks annoy me, especially when I want to play games on my laptop.Īnyway, good discussion. I don't think Steam is in any danger of going down any time soon, so that possibility doesn't enter into my decision-making process at all. I do give them away from time to time, so that will suck 3 years from now when I'd want to give E:TW to a friend, but that's not a critical issue either.

I personally don't resell games, so that aspect doesn't bother me. The project will support all future iterations of the Total War series and supports all games in the series since Empire: Total War. I thought you were against the Steam requirement simply on moral grounds, and I was wondering why one form of DRM didn't bother you while another bothered you to the point you'd pass up a game for that reason alone.

Your account could get hacked, but Valve is pretty good at helping people recover those from what I've heard. You do lose the ability to resell or give away your game, and yes, the service could go down (or you could lose the ability to play during a local outage). When did putting in a cd/dvd in a tray become such a hastle? Are kids today really that lazy? How did it become so OK for companies to control what we purchase for the sake of not having to use cd/dvds in the drive. But I on the other hand live in the real world where less intrusive actually means not having to deal with middlemen to play my games. So if its less intrusive for you to be forced to hand your games over to a company to keep track of what you own, rather than just keeping on disks in a safe place, then go right ahead. Something happens to the service your SOL, Not to mention that if you don't want the game anymore and would like to sell it or give to a friend, no can do since your game is tied to your account. I don't see how its less intrusive to be forced to register an SP game with an online service where if something happens to your account (ie Hacked) your SOL.

PS.Why is it such a surprise to be for 1 type and against another? Wouldnt that be completely obvious? Online Registration =/= simple cd check, hence 2 diff types of protections, so 2 diff types of opinions. The battles in Medieval and Medieval 2 are still today second to none! In the end, after the novelty of musket-fire wears thin I think I'll be heading back to M2:TW or even the original Medieval:TW. Overall, it feels like the game was "rushed" through development. The AI seems "dumber" than in previous titles.Ĩ. I'm feeling like they spent more time ADDING the naval battles to EMPIRE and less time perfecting the land battles.ħ. The naval battles "feel" like they're part of a different game. Not sure if it's just that the sword and spear-combat seem more VISCERAL than muskets?Ħ. I'm finding the battles somewhat LESS satisfying than the previous TW series. The campaign-map does "stutter" now and then, but that's no biggieĥ. The load-times are BLAZING FAST (at least on my machine)Ĥ. The MP matchmaking (NAT-T etc.) works beautifully.ģ. (needless to say I have a kickass internet connection! hehe)Ģ. I got the entire thing via STEAM on release-night/day (March 4th) in just over 2 hrs.

I suspect the game will follow in the footsteps of M2TW: a year's worth of patches combined with some heavy modding to make the game as enjoyable as it should be.ġ. I would think this would be common sense for game companies, especially in these tough economic times.īesides that annoying issue, ETW does seem to be another buggy entry. I am firmly in Stardock/Ironclad's boat: games should be made to run with quality graphics on mid-range systems. Whenever they release a new TW, they always blow the minimum specs out of the water. I can run the game on medium just fine, but like you, I am miffed that ETW requires a practically brand new rig/graphics card to run at high or better (I can run M2TW on high or better). I can't even start the land battle without it freezing on me two seconds in. This is sad too, because I loved all the Total War games, but this game is just unplayable for me. Worse still, after a few tries and getting it to the worse settings possible and waiting almost ten minutes on the load to the tutorials, I found the graphics to look like shogun total war with the performance of a next-gen fps. I can have a maxed graphics game of Medieval 2 run perfectly, yet I can't even apply a graphics change to this game without it freezing. You have to have steam running.even for the demo.
